After working in Goa since 2004, LIM was registered as a trust in Goa in April 2007. With the new trust came a new project, a children’s home named the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse welcomed its first children into the home in June 2007. The aim of the Lighthouse is to provide a family atmosphere and to develop the children in its care through love and encouragement, to give the children a hope and belief in themselves, thereby enabling each child to achieve the best they can and to give each child the hope and opportunity of a brighter tomorrow.
The home was established primarily to meet the needs of children some of whom have parents who are HIV positive. The home also provides help for children who are in difficult circumstances and children who have different levels of ability. Some of our children are orphans, a number of our children have a parent or guardian who have serious health issues, the majority of our children have a single parent.
Tricia and Graham are and English couple who are members of the Lighthouse in Manchester. They had been assisting charities in Goa since 1999, and began working with LIM in Goa in 2005.
There are currently two homes for children, one for boys and one for girls, both in Tivim, Goa. The girls’ home is a very large property, capable of accommodating up to 20 girls. The boys’ home is a smaller property which can cater for up to 12 boys.
Because the aim is to develop the children through love and encouragement to achieve the best they can, and to live as a family, the number of children in the homes is kept relatively small.
It is essential that the children have the opportunity of a good education; we aim to encourage capable students in further studies and for all children to have the opportunity of vocational training.
